Why You Should Own an Impact Driver

Jonny Essex/Shutterstock
Impact drivers are among the most inexpensive tools you can buy that will instantly improve your DIY life. I waited years before purchasing an impact driver and immediately regretted not buying one sooner. Don’t be me—get one now.
Many people skip buying an impact driver when they learn that a power drill does everything an impact driver does and more. After all, a power drill can drill holes (it’s right there in the name) and drive screws. That’s why home center stores typically call the tool a power drill/driver.
Impact drivers, on the other hand, can only drive fasteners  (like screws, lag bolts or lag screws). But once you understand what an impact driver is and how it works, you’ll want to own one.
What is an Impact Driver?
An impact driver is a tool made specifically for driving fasteners. At first glance, the body of an impact driver looks remarkably similar to a power drill, and you might confuse the two. But key differences make the impact driver better at its job than a power drill ever will be.
A power drill works by engaging a motor to turn the chuck holding your drill or screw bit. It’s simple and effective but doesn’t give you a great deal of torque.
An impact driver, on the other hand, contains additional components. If you take one apart, you’ll find a motor, a spring, a notched hammer, and a bar-shaped anvil. When you pull the trigger, the motor turns just like a drill.
When the impact driver encounters resistance (from the wood you’re screwing into for instance), the spring engages by pulling back. It then releases, which pushes the rotating hammer forward. That impacts and turns the anvil, which rotates the collet holding your driver bit. Here’s a video that shows the process in slow-motion.

When you use an impact driver, you can feel and hear the anvil strikes. It’s easy to think the impact is purely a downward force, but it’s more rotational than vertical. That leads to a great deal of torque without putting a lot of pressure on your arm, which is why impact drivers are better at driving screws than drills.

How to Remove a URL’s Trailing Underscore in Chrome

Google Chrome lets you add custom search engines to search any site with a special keyword. However, sometimes Chrome adds a trailing underscore to the URL, which can cause problems if you try to enter it in the address bar.
Why Does This Happen?
Although it’s uncertain why this happens, it seems as though Chrome adds a trailing underscore to some URLs that use a custom search or keyword to query a website.
RELATED: How to Search Any Site from Chrome’s Address Bar
One theory is that somewhere along the line when you add a custom search engine, it gets duplicated, and instead of throwing an error and breaking, Chrome appends the keyword with an underscore and continues as if nothing happened.
The main problem with this is the keyword looks a lot like a properly formed URL—only with an underscore at the end. When you start to type a URL in the Omnibox, Chrome suggests this underscore-containing URL, and then you could either hit Tab or Enter to complete the action.
If you chose to press Tab, you can enter a search term to query that website—great! However, if you decide to hit Enter, Chrome tries to look up that website’s IP address; when the DNS probe can’t find anything, you get an error stating, “This site can’t be reached.”

Unfortunately, there’s no rhyme or reason as to why this bug affects only certain URLs, but here’s an easy fix that only takes a minute or two.

Why Does My Yard Smell Like Cat Urine?

Atelier M/Shutterstock
If you’re like me, and you’ve spent way too much time investigating why there is a pervasive smell of cat urine in your yard, the source might surprise you (and you can fix it).
First things first: there’s always a chance that the cat urine smell you smell in your yard of wafting through your windows is, in fact, cat urine. Especially if you have indoor cats, there may be outdoor cats marking your home. But if the smell isn’t just one pungent moment in time but a low-grade smell of cat urine that seems to persist well through the spring and summer, then you can safely stop blaming the random stray.
Instead, you should blame the boxwoods. While there are a variety of ornamental landscaping trees, shrubs, and plants that have varying less-than-pleasant smells, the boxwood is the likely culprit in your yard. Not only is the acrid and persistent cat urine smell unique to the plant, but boxwoods are practically ubiquitous in landscaping throughout much of America, Europe, and beyond. While walking the dog the other evening, I did a rough tally of the homes in my neighborhood that had boxwoods planted in the yard. Over 90% of them did—most of them planted, unfortunately, under the windows.
It’s a shame because boxwoods are lovely in landscaping. They’re a rich glossy green, they’re easy to shape into everything from simple spheres and cubes to complex topiaries, and it’s tough to beat them for the relatively inexpensive visual weight they add to your landscaping. It’s hard even to imagine a formal English garden without boxwood everywhere.
Alas, I’ll be ripping mine out because I don’t want to spend another year where every time I open the windows I think “Why does it smell so much like cat piss in here?”
Finally, I’ll forewarn you: despite the claims of landscapers and garden supply shops that there are no-odor or low-odor boxwoods, there are not. The boxwoods planted outside my windows are specifically a cultivar, Buxus microphylla var. japonica, commonly called Winter Gem boxwood on account of how vibrant it says over the winter. It is frequently cited, along with the Wintergreen variant, as the perfect boxwood to plant to avoid the cat urine smell.
I can assure you, it is not.

What Should You Do If You Receive a Phishing Email?

Rawpixel.com/ShutterStock
If you receive a phishing email, it can be a bit scary. Fortunately, nothing infects your computer if you don’t click any links or respond. Here’s what to do (and what not to do) if you receive a phishing email.
In a phishing email, the sender tries to get you to click a link or provide personal information, like bank details or passwords. They are a conventional social engineering attack. We’ve explained in detail how phishing emails work, which is worth a read if you’re unfamiliar with them or don’t know how to spot one.
But what should you do if you receive a phishing email?
Don’t Panic and Don’t Click Any Links
When you get a suspected phishing email, don’t panic. Modern email clients, like Outlook, Gmail, and Apple Mail, do a great job of filtering out emails that contain malicious code or attachments. Just because a phishing email lands in your inbox, it doesn’t mean your computer is infected with a virus or malware.
It’s perfectly safe to open an email (and use the preview panel). Mail clients haven’t allowed code to run when you open (or preview) an email for a decade or more.
Phishing emails are a genuine security risk, though. You should never click a link in an email or open an attachment to one unless you are 100 percent confident you know and trust the sender. You should also never reply to the sender—even to tell them not to send you any further mail.
Phishers might send emails to thousands of addresses every day, and if you reply to one of their messages, it confirms your email address is live. This makes you even more of a target. Once the phisher knows you’re reading his emails, he’ll send more attempts and hope one of them works.
So to be clear: Don’t click any links, don’t open any attachments, and don’t reply.

The Best Windows Business Laptops of 2019

Lenovo, HP, Panasonic
If you travel for business and need to take your laptop with you everywhere, you should pass on the average Ultrabook. They aren’t hardy enough and lack certain features you might need. Here are some of our favorite laptops for business.
What’s a Business Laptop, Anyway?
Unlike Intel’s Ultrabooks, no one owns the definition of the Business Laptop category. So, you won’t find the same set of features on every laptop that markets itself to business professionals, but they generally share some of the same features.
Business laptops usually have a muted, simple design, hardened materials, biometric readers (like a fingerprint scanner or access card reader), easy access to components for upgrades, a lock system (usually from Kensington), and more ports than the average Ultrabook. Because of these features, business laptops are also typically heavier than Ultrabooks.
Muted designs don’t mean business laptops are ugly. But they don’t tend to have visual extras, like glowing LEDs or fancy colors. Think of like a mature adult who graduated to grown-up body wash and left Axe behind. It’s not flashy, but it gets the job done, and it looks presentable for the office.
With that in mind, here are our top picks.
The Best Overall: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon
Lenovo
Remember when we said not every description and feature above applies to every business laptop? Well the Thinkpad X1 Carbon set our design comments aside by flirting with Ultrabook status.
Sleek, light, and on the thin side, when it’s closed, you might confuse the X1 Carbon for an average Ultrabook. When you open it, though, all the familiar Thinkpad stylings reveal themselves, from the Trackpoint pointer to the classic Thinkpad trackpad. The X1 Carbon doesn’t skimp on other specs; it features a powerful Intel i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. It doesn’t skimp on ports either. It has an ethernet jack, 4 USB ports (including 2 Thunderbolt USB-C ports), and a full-size HDMI port.

The Best Overall Business Laptop

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Laptop, High Performance Windows Laptop, (Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows 10 Pro), 20KH002JUS

The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon is a sleek business laptop that has the power and ports to get you anywhere.
