Technology and Privacy: What’s Going on at CES 2017

It’s that time of year again – CES! Last week we attended the Consumer Electronics Show, which took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. We were there talking privacy and security and checking out all the developing trends. A couple of big themes emerged.
Drones
As we touched on last year, the popularity and accessibility of drones continues to increase, with more consumers than ever purchasing drones for personal use. Some of the most creative drones at the show included pocket drones, underwater drones, drones that follow you around and even some large enough to hold human passengers. Whether capturing photography, videotaping moments from above or just flying for fun, with this influx of drones comes an influx of privacy-related concerns. Many drones are connected devices, and many are running on Wi-Fi – which raises concerns around the security of data being transmitted.
Virtual Reality
Advances in virtual reality continue, improving the quality of VR and the number of platforms on the market. This year’s CES saw a wide variety of VR (and AR) platforms being launched, illustrating the trend towrads these platforms as they continue to evolve. Although VR is still relatively niche, it’s becoming less cost-prohibitive and more popular. Some of this year’s major platforms included the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.
Other Notable Trends
Smart Homes
Internet of Things
Televisions
Wearables
Implications for Privacy
Along with all the new tech comes some privacy concerns. As more devices appear on the market – and more devices become connected – the opportunity for privacy threats and exploitation increases exponentially. We’ve seen Internet of Things devices used as a botnet to conduct DDoS attacks, we’ve seen unsecured Wi-Fi expose personal information from unsuspecting users and we’ve seen bulk data collected and used in alarming and unprecedented ways. As items that dominate this show continue to proliferate, so do the vulnerabilities and privacy threats associated witht hem. Now more than ever it’s essential for people to be aware of the privacy risks and understand what information their favorite devices are collecting, as well as how that information is being used.
We’re excited about all the upcoming tech and trends, but as always hope consumers will be aware and wary of the privacy risks assocaited with them and take measures to safeguard personal information. All in all we had a blast – We’re looking forward to next year’s show!

Email Privacy Act Reintroduced in the House: Show Your Support Now

Congressmen Kevin Yoder and Jared Polis dropped the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 699) yesterday, reintroducing the bill in the House.
The Email Privacy Act previously passed the House of Representatives in April 2016, without opposition and widely supported as a bipartisan piece of legislation. The final vote was 28-0.  The Email Privacy Act is the policy update to ECPA (Electronic Communications Privacy Act), which governs how and when the government can view electronic communications, or the privacy of these documents. The communication methods include email, as well as documents stored in the cloud. ECPA was originally written in 1986, and is grossly outdated when you consider the technological advances and shifts in communication since then.
We’re pleased to see the Email Privacy Act being pushed forward, and again affirm our support for this legislation. As the bill received widespread support last year, we hope to see it garner the same support in this Congress. We urge everyone to take into consideration the value of personal communications, and the importance of protecting privacy in today’s digital age. In addition to providing some much needed privacy protections, the Email Privacy Act also represents the importance and necessity of updating legislation to respond to changing trends and innovations in the technology industry and the world at large – especially for the cloud computing industry and businesses.
We urge the speedy passage of the Email Privacy Act, as an update to ECPA is more than long overdue. Last year, we signed on to a coalition letter organized by our friends at CDT supporting the legislation (in addition to other previous efforts on ECPA), and we will continue to support it as it moves forward. Information on how you can get involved is included below.

What is ECPA and Why Does it Need Reform?
ECPA sets the rules for when police and the government can read our email, look at our photos and access other content stored in the cloud. ECPA has remained unchanged since it was originally passed – in 1986. This is concerning considering the huge and widespread technological advances that have taken place since then, which have left our communications open to unwarranted government intrusion and privacy violations. As the law is currently written, government and law enforcement officials can access personal communications and documents in remote storage in the cloud after 90 days with merely a subpoena, meaning no prior consideration from a judge is necessary. This opens the door for government snooping and privacy violations, as well as threatens fourth amendment rights. Learn more about ECPA reform, legislation, and previous efforts to move the Email Privacy Act forward.

EU Court Rejects Data Retention, With Implications for Snooper’s Charter

In late December, the highest court in Europe made a ruling that “general and indiscriminate” data retention, or collection of communications information, is not in line with existing EU law. The ruling means that governments and companies can no longer conduct sweeping surveillance and indiscriminate collection of information (an activity also referred to as data retention) as they previously were under EU’s Data Retention Directive. The ruling states the Data Retention Directive, which was passed in 2006, violates two of citizens’ basic rights – “respect for private life and protection of personal data.” You can view the full ruling here.
This ruling is seen as a victory for privacy advocates and anyone concerned about the privacy of their personal communications information. The ruling combats bulk data collection and limits surveillance activities, while still allowing for “targeted” retention of data for use in fighting crime is allowable. The EU is reportedly working on a new data protection law as a result.
Implications for the Snooper’s Charter
As many outlets are reporting, this ruling could have serious implicates for the United Kingdom and their recently-passed “Snooper’s Charter.” Often referred to as a surveillance bill, the Snooper’s Charter includes sweeping data retention provisions which have now been invalidated by the EU ruling.

More Censorship in the Middle East as Egypt Blocks Signal

Last week it was reported that Egypt blocked Signal, a secure encrypted messaging app used by people around the world to communicate. Users in Egypt using an Egyptian IP address reportedly could not send or receive messages on the application.
The company behind the app – Open Whisper Systems – has found a way to bypass the block and has since restored service to users.
Egypt has previously censored sites and applications, including banning VOIP services in the country, as well as other messaging services such as WhatsApp and Viber.
Censorship in Egypt and the Middle East
Although service has been restored to Signal, Egypt’s increasing censorship practices are concering and uphold an alarming trend of increasing censorship in the country and the entire region. As reported by Freedom on the Net, censorship in the Middle East has been increasing in recent years. At Golden Frog we previously wrote on the topic, noting that:
“Egyptians have long fought with their government for less oppressive censorship. Within the past few years, Egypt has witnessed many types of media censorship, from Internet to television…In 2015, Internet restriction by the government still seemed to be a critical issue, with censorship coming directly from a state-aligned media establishment.”
VyprVPN recently added a new server location in Egypt, providing access to a local access point so users in the area can access a free and open Internet experience devoid of censorship. View all our server locations, and retain access to a free and open Internet – Get VyprVPN Now.

Turkey frequently blocks social media sites, especially in response to political events or violence within the country. There was reportedly an additional, more severe, Internet block the Friday preceding the event.
