Change Show Notifications Prompt Behaviour Google Chrome

Some websites you visit have started adding push notifications so they can send a message when new content is available that you may want to read on their site.

When you visit a site that has this enabled on Chrome you will see a popup somesite.com wants to show notifications and you have the choice to allow or block.

You can actually change the behaviour of this popup to either stop the message ever appearing and never receive messages from websites, leave it as the default (the one that shows the popup) or stop the message ever appearing and allow all sites to push messages to your device.

You can change this behaviour in you Chrome settings page. There are 2 styles of Chrome settings pages (default & material) so there are 2 guides below

Default Settings Page:

In your Chrome Omnibox (address bar) type chrome://settings
Select Show advanced settings
Select Content Settings
Under Notifications you will see a selection of notifications:
Allow all sites to show notifications
Ask when a site wants to show notifications
Do not allow any site to show notifications You won’t see any notifications from websites
Choose the one you want from here.

Material Settings Page:

In your Chrome Omnibox (address bar) type chrome://settings
Scroll down to the Privacy and security section
Select Site Settings
Select Notifications
By default you will see Ask before sending recommended with an on/off switch
If you want to block the popup just turn it off
You will also see a list of sites that you have previously allowed to send notifications. If you want to now block some of those sites just click on the 3 dots and select block

Internet Archive WayBack Machine Chrome Extension

If you have ever visited a site to look for an article only to find the article has been removed for whatever reason you will usually see a 404 page. This means the page has been removed and is no longer available.

The Internet Archive (archive.org) have created an extension for Chrome which will allow you to see an archived version of any pages you are looking for and are no longer available on the site.

The Internet Archive has been taking snapshots of webpages from around the web for over 20 years so there is a good chance that if you come across a 404 then the Internet Archive will have an old copy of that page.

If you land on a 404 page then the extension will check the archive to see of there is a copy of that page and if there is a copy it will provide a link for you to click so you can see the old page.

This could be a very useful extension to some users.

If you want to give it a try then you can download it from the Chrome Web Store

Apparently it has been available for Firefox for a while already so if you are a Firefox user and want to give it a try then you can download it from here

How to Export your Chrome Passwords

With the huge popularity of Google’s Chrome browser there will be lots of users on this site who have a lot of passwords saved for all their favourite sites.

If for any reason you want to export all those passwords you can easily do it using the following steps.

Open Chrome
Type chrome://flags/#password-import-export
You will now be on your Chrome Flags page (if you have never been here before then please be careful as you could start enabling stuff in Chrome which effects the way it functions).
You will be immediately taken to the Password import and export section
Click on the drop down box which will be marked as Default and change it to Enabled
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on RELAUNCH NOW
When Chrome relaunches type chrome://settings/passwords into the omnibox (address bar)
You will now see your passwords and an Import and Export button
Hit Export
You will now be asked for your Windows/Linux/OSX user account password before you can proceed. Enter your password.
Your passwords will now download in csv format
Now you have your passwords in a format that you can easily import into any password manager, if that is the reason you wanted your passwords in the first place.

ChromeOS/ChromeBook Keyboard Shortcuts

I have always been a Macbook Pro user and was hugely disappointed when they released their latest versions; they could have done so much more to improve on the previous version. Anyway, to cut the story short I didn’t upgrade and bought a Chromebook.

As I do a lot within the Google ecosystem it was a no-brainer and so far I haven’t been disappointed with a very cheap piece of equipment. So from now on you are going to see a lot of posts on ChromeOS tips on my site (as well as the usual stuff of course)

I thought I’d start with the keyboard shortcuts as when I use a Mac I don’t even think about what I am doing my fingers go straight to the keyboard shortcuts and this obviously didn’t work when I was trying to do some things on the Chromebook. Hopefully there will be other new Chromebook owners who will find this useful.

If you are using a small mobile phone to view this then turn the phone landscape view to get a better view of the screenshots.

Rather than typing out EVERY keyboard shortcut I thought the easiest way to show which key combinations will complete the task you want is to show screenshots. You can easily see these on your Chromebook by pressing ctrl+alt+/ (but I’ll also add a list of some useful ones). If you do that you will get a screen that looks like this

If you look at the dialog in blue in the centre of the image it says “Hold control, Alt, Shift or Search to see keyboard shortcuts for those modifiers”

So if I now press the ctrl key the screen changes to show you what would happen if you combine ctrl with any other key

A lot of the shortcuts many users will already know but there will be a few that you may not have seen before and this is a great way to learn just exactly will happen when the keys are combined.

Now lets look when you click on the alt key (sorry about the screenshot but it’s hard to do the alt modifier and then try the screenshot shortcut)

Now the ctrl+alt screenshot

ctrl+shift

If you can master all these then you will be the ultimate Chromebook Master haha. But as you can see from the screenshots there are lots to use and hopefully they will help improve your productivity whilst working on your new Chromebook

Clean Google Calendar is a new Chrome app from Stephen Firrincieli.

The app is designed to give Google Calendar a much cleaner feel than the web app version which hasn’t had many changes over the years and is rather cluttered. It also launches as a desktop application.

Clean Google Calendar gives you an interface for Google Calendar that makes it more straightforward and enjoyable to use.

If you are a user of Google Calendar then this may be of interest to you.

Clean Google Calendar can be downloaded from here

Code is open source at https://github.com/sfirrin/Clean-Google-Calendar and licensed GPLv3.
