UW clinicians are studying the feasibility of real-time cancer diagnosis during surgery with a light-sheet microscope by uploading 3D tissue images to a cloud computing platform using a UW-IT-designed high-speed network. These large images require 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections and use Amazon Web Services for transporting and processing the massive amounts of data. Current pathology methods for cancer diagnosis include either a detailed process for studying tissue samples that can take days or a quick technique to freeze and slice tissue samples that is not always reliable.
