The Department of Atmospheric Sciences cut its electrical demand by 47 percent by decreasing the number of servers and moving them to the 4545 Data Center. In making the move, Atmospheric Sciences joined approximately 60 departments across the UW in choosing to house and manage their servers in the UW’s central data centers, operated by UW-IT. UW Tower Data Center earned ENERGY STAR certification for the fifth year in a row, a claim no other university in the country can make. The award recognizes superior energy efficiency and reduced carbon footprint. The data center is a centrally managed, secure facility powered and cooled without interruption, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It houses the computer, storage and networks that are the backbone for the UW’s administrative, academic and research computing systems.

The Open Learning Lab (OLL) reopened this fall with a new layout, computing equipment and furniture. The renovation was supported by a grant from the Student Technology Fee. The design team used universal design principles to improve accessibility and flexibility as well as promote collaboration. Stop by Commons Hall (UW2-140) to use the big-screen 65-inch Avacor Surface Hub and new workstations set up with headphones, computers with photo, video, and sound editing software, improved ergonomics, and a charging outlet for phone and laptop.
