At any given time in the academic year, thousands of students want to know if they are on track to graduate, if they have satisfied degree requirements for a major, or how their coursework from other colleges will transfer to the UW. Listening to students and using a user-centered design process proved critical to the latest successful redesign of MyUW’s student portal, according to a new published article in Campus Technology. In total, 57 students participated in the user-focused design studies and more than 400 responded to the survey. The article encourages other institutions to consider a user-centered approach when designing student technology tools.

To engage and meet the needs of students through online learning, Penelope Moon and the Office of Digital Learning and Innovation (DLI) offer a plethora of resources. With DLI’s support, UW Bothell faculty have built more than 90 fully online courses and more than 250 hybrid courses, with at least 50 percent of the course online. The UW Seattle-based student group held on to their regional title in the Pacific Rim Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, which they’ve won nearly every year since 2008. Now they’re at the national competition where they are among the ten teams from around the country competing for the championship. The student teams must operate and manage a network infrastructure like one found at a business and protect it from cyber attackers who try to infiltrate the network over a three-day period, and try to take down critical services and steal sensitive data.

Instructors can use their Husky Card to access audio/visual equipment in some classrooms with a single tap. Many general assignment classrooms with locked drawers and teaching podia have already been outfitted with this new technology that uses a RFID system connected to your Husky Card for unlocking classroom technology.
