UW Libraries recognized with award for accessibility efforts

The University Libraries received the first-ever IT Capacity Building Award for their efforts to make IT information resources accessible to all faculty, staff and students at the University of Washington, including those with disabilities. The award was presented by the UW’s IT Accessibility Task Force, a group made up of representatives from across campus that develop and implement plans for promoting IT accessibility at the University.

Trailblazers honored for efforts to forge new paths for people with disabilities

Four individuals were honored with “Trailblazer” awards by the DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) Center for the work they do to change how the world views people with disabilities and to increase the potential of people with disabilities to succeed in college, careers, and community life. The Trailblazer award winners were Shiri Azenkot (Cornell Tech, Cornell University), Courtney Cole (DO-IT ambassador and 2013 Scholar), Shaun Kane (University of Colorado Boulder) and John Kemp (American Association of People with Disabilities). Hadi Rangin receives UW Outstanding Staff Award

Hadi Rangin — an IT accessibility specialist and also blind — champions equal access to technology and promotes accessible design in software applications and tools. He was honored with the 2018 Bob Roseth Outstanding Staff Award by the UW Professional Staff Organization. He advises individuals and groups through collaborations, on-site training, and workshops on accessibility. His work has influenced the accessible design and development of many familiar products, including Microsoft Office Tools, Microsoft Windows, Panopto, Zoom, ServiceNow, Workday, Google Cloud Platform, Interfolio, and many more.

UW’s DO-IT Center honored with national award for its youth mentoring programs

Thanks to its extensive mentoring programs, the UW’s Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking and Technology (DO-IT) Center was named among this year’s recipients of the prestigious Susan M. Daniels Mentoring Hall of Fame award by the National Disability Mentoring Coalition. “We are honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame,” said Sheryl Burgstahler, who founded and directs DO-IT. “Individuals with disabilities make our communities more vibrant, diverse and inclusive. We share this award with the mentors in our programs who serve as advocates, guides and role models for others.”
