This month forty-nine teams from 35 countries will compete in Microsoft’s Imagine Cup World Finals in Redmond for a chance to win up to $100,000 and a consultation with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Teams will stay in Alder Hall on the University campus where they will have access to the UW’s high-speed wired and Wi-Fi services. In its sixteenth year, the international competition challenges teams of university students to create applications that shape how we live, work and play. The Imagine Cup World Championships will be live-streamed from downtown Seattle on July 25, beginning at 9 a.m.

More than 4,000 athletes and coaches from all 50 states will visit Seattle and the surrounding region to participate in the Special Olympics USA Games kicking off July 1. The UW will be the primary venue, and athletes will stay in Seattle campus residence halls, including Willow Hall, a new residence building on north campus that offers state-of-the-art technology. The UW’s high-bandwidth wired and Wi-Fi connectivity will help the event run smoothly and support the thousands of expected connected devices that athletes, parents, coaches, staff and spectators will bring. UW’s wireless network is designed for secure, seamless access to online resources. But your device — be it a computer, phone, printer — may still be vulnerable. UW-IT and the Office of the Chief Information Officer recommend the following best practices:
Use secure protocols (e.g., https: in your web browser).
Always apply security updates to your operating system.
Keep your anti-virus software up to date.
Use your computer’s built-in secure firewall.
Use Husky OnNet to securely connect to the UW network when off campus.
Do not install a departmental or “do it yourself” Wi-Fi access point. These are prohibited, can affect the performance and security of the UW’s Wi-Fi infrastructure, and can be vulnerable to an attack.
Turn off the wireless card in printers if not connecting to the UW’s Wi-Fi network.
