Laying the groundwork for a more diverse population at UW and beyond

Learn how AccessEngineering, AccessComputing and the DO-IT Center maximize the potential of people with disabilities in academic programs and encourage accessibility, universal design, and inclusivity in curriculum and instruction. Among their activities is a holiday toy hack event at UW Seattle where engineering students learn how to reconfigure toys to make them more accessible for children with disabilities. In the summer, high school students design, build and test assistive robots during a week-long robotics camp through the DO-IT Scholars summer program.

DO-IT Scholars program featured on UW 360

UWTV showcases how a summer program empowers high school students with disabilities to succeed in college. The program, offered by the Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology (DO-IT) Center since 1992, boosts the confidence of students with disabilities and teaches them how to advocate for themselves. Participating students get access to technology, college preparation, peer support and mentoring.

UW’s DO-IT Center honored with national award for its youth mentoring programs

Thanks to its extensive mentoring programs, the UW’s Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking and Technology (DO-IT) Center was named among this year’s recipients of the prestigious Susan M. Daniels Mentoring Hall of Fame award by the National Disability Mentoring Coalition. “We are honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame,” said Sheryl Burgstahler, who founded and directs DO-IT. “Individuals with disabilities make our communities more vibrant, diverse and inclusive. We share this award with the mentors in our programs who serve as advocates, guides and role models for others.”

UW Bothell’s IT champions universal design principles to support students

The Universal Design for Active Learning at UW Bothell promotes equitable access to electronic materials, best practices in course design and teaching, and active learning and engagement. Universal design refers to spaces, environments and products that are accessible to all people, including those with disabilities. A year old, the initiative has influenced the integration of universal design in course and class design, faculty development and learning communities, and student support materials.

Sign up to be an IT Accessibility Liaison

Promote accessible IT by joining new network of liaisons being established across UW’s three campuses who learn about accessible technology resources and share that information with their respective units.  Coordinated by Accessible Technology Services, the liaison program is part of the IT Accessibility Initiative that encourages the procurement, development, and use of IT that is accessible to everyone. Liaisons connect online and participate in meetings three times a year to learn about and share resources that promote accessible IT at the University, including raising awareness of the University and the state’s IT accessibility policies.
